(The 228 Incident – Kaohsiung Museum of History)

Constructed in 1939 during later period of Japanese Occupation that lasted 50 years, the building of Kaohsiung Museum of History at that time housed the second Takao Municipal Office. Later, it was moved toward the east from the original site to administratively coincide with the new development of metro area of the city. This imperial crown-styled building was shaped to resemble the Kao character (高) in Chinese derived from the meaning “fly high” of Kaohsiung. The building was taken over by Taiwanese government and become Kaohsiung City Hall in 1945.

As the 228 incident spread across Taiwan in 1947, this location was deemed as a place where the rebels congregated. This led to violent suppressions by the formerly KMT government. On March 6th of the year, military massacres were brought in by commander of Kaohsiung Fortress to bombard and rake the city, slaughtering numberless civilians along with several cit councilors arrested and executed. This place eventually became the historical symbol of cultural and ethnic conflicts in Kaohsiung area. Then, after the City government offices were moved out in 1992, the building was transformed into Kaohsiung Museum of History, setting an example of creating cultural assets by renovating urban historical monument.

Mankind have to repeatedly learn and understand the nobility and dignity of a human being, tolerate social diversity, respect others’ sensitivity, in order to enter public sphere of influence and defend public wealth. Conspicuously, this historical site and environment may solemnly lead us in the path toward magnanimity.
